On June 11, 2002, the New York Daily News ran an article called, Bank Blocks Hunt for 9/11 Remains. Its author is Gregg Gittrich. It reported that Deutsche Bank refused to let firefighters search 130 Liberty Street for human remains saying a fungus posed a health risk. '130 Liberty St. is too toxic' in essence Deutsche Bank told NYC. Deutsche Bank wanted to get the results of a test before permitting the search. It quotes Mayor Bloomberg as describing a conversation the Mayor had with FDNY Commissioner Scoppetta.
"I [Bloomberg] asked him [Scoppetta] point-blank, was this something that Deutsche Bank was slowing us down, or did he want that test done first? And he said quite explicitly he does not want to jeopardize the lives of our firefighters," the mayor said. "He would prefer to wait two more days."
Comments: This is June 2002. Mr. Scoppetta knew in June 2002 that the toxic contents of 130 Liberty Street put the health and well-being of firefighters in jeopardy. What did he do since then to protect the health and well-being of firefighters who he knew would need to enter the toxic building for inspections and to fight fires. Who did he put in charge for planning for 130 Liberty Street? What plans were made? Morevoer, when Mr. Scoppetta decided that non-entry into toxic 130 Liberty Street was the better policy, did he put this policy in writing or was it an unwritten policy? In August 2007, none of the firefighters at Engine 10 had any training, haz mat suits, decontamination gear, a plan of how to inspect, a plan to fight fires, etc.
