"They wrapped 130 Liberty St. in a Haz-Mat Suit"

One firefighter overheard saying to another firefighter:

1st Firefighter:  "Look, they wrapped  the entire building in a Haz-Mat Suit!"

2nd Firefighter: "But not us. What about us? Don't they care about us?"

Note:  130 Liberty Street has been so toxic that it was wrapped in a "skin" to keep what is inside in and what is outside out.  If this was so important to do for the building itself, was this not also important to do for the firefighters who might be called upon to pierce its "skin", enter the building and encounter the toxins? For more information on HazMat Suits, see Wikipedia

"Decon is a vital part of a hazardous materials emergency response. It is so important, in fact, that no one is permitted to enter a hazardous area until a decon operation is set up and functional [29 CFR 1910.120(k)(2)]. " See, Occupational Health and Safety.  What was FDNY's written policy on post-inspection, post-firefighting decontamination procedure for firefighters entering a toxic building? Was there any? What instructions or training were given to Engine 10 and Ladder 10 about it? Any?

If FDNY wanted firefighters to inspect a toxic building, one would expect that FDNY would have

  1. trained the firefighters of Engine 10 on how to inspect it,
  2. equiped the firefighters of Engine 10 with protective hazmat suits ,
  3. provided decontamination equipment to the firefighters of Engine 10 for after the inspections?

Instead FDNY did nothing. No training. No protective hazmat suits. No decontamination. No nothing.
